چکیده

A 0 3 3 C v 2 C v C O-Attempts to understand the fundamental physical limits of computation have been under way for over a quarter century. We discuss this field, with B e 3 3 3 S 3 S 0 emphasis on the central notion of reversible computation, and emphasis on the relationship to the ultimate nature of physical law. A brief discussion of the generation of information is included. In ordinary computation, noise is a source of error, to be offset to the maximum possible extent. This can be done via reversible computation. Alternatively, there are situations in which noise controls the transitions in a system between many competing states of local stability, and can be used to explore this manifold. In the general case, where the noise depends on the state of the system, relative stability can only be determined by the kinetics along the whole pathway from one state of local stability to another one. Examination of the two terminal states to be compared cannot tell us which is the more likely state.

On the physical implementation of logical transformations: Generalized L-machines

Any account of computation in a physical system, whether an artificial computing device or a natural system considered from a computational point of view, invokes some notion of the relationship between the abstract-logical and concrete-physical aspects of computation. In a recent paper, James Ladyman explored this relationship using a ‘‘hybrid physical–logical entity’’ – the L-machine – and th...

Precision Timed (PRET) Computation in Cyber-Physical Systems

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are integrations of computation with physical processes. Embedded computers and networks monitor and control the physical processes, usually with feedback loops where physical processes affect computations and vice versa. In the physical world, the passage of time is inexorable and concurrency is intrinsic. Neither of these properties is present in today’s computing...

Mirror symmetry => 2-view stereo geometry

We address the problem of 3-D reconstruction from a single perspective view of a mirror symmetric scene. We establish the fundamental result that it is geometrically equivalent to observing the scene with two cameras, the cameras being symmetrical with respect to the unknown 3-D symmetry plane. All traditional tools of classical 2-view stereo can then be applied, and the concepts of fundamental...

Nondeterministic Structure of Computation

Divergence and nondeterminism play a fundamental role in the theory of computation. Their combined effect on computational equality deserves further study. By looking at the issue from the point of view of both computation and interaction, one is led to a canonical equality for nondeterministic computation, revealing its rich algebraic structure. The structure is studied in three ways. Firstly ...

What kind of machine is the mind?

Many computational modeling approaches of the mind seem to be characterized by an implicit strong physicalism, which frequently leads to confusion in philosophy of AI. This work aims at pointing out some fundamental aspects of this problem, both with respect to the relation between epistemological computationalism and physical realization, and the view of symbol manipulation as constrained comp...
